POLICE INVESTIGATE RECKLESS DRIVING ON NEW YEAR’S EVE

PORTSMOUTH, VA — The Portsmouth Police Department is aware of a video circulating online showing reckless driving that occurred on December 31, 2021, near High Street.

Although it is unfortunate that individuals chose to come to Portsmouth to break the law, we can assure the public that officers did respond to the scene and cleared the streets upon notification of the matter. At least two calls for service were generated to the 911 Dispatch Center. The first call was made at 11:39 p.m., and a second call came in at 11:40 p.m.

At 11:43 p.m. officers responded to the 2100 block of High Street, Eastbound. Our officers cleared the streets immediately without incident. The call was cleared by police at 11:52 p.m.

Investigators have acquired surveillance footage of the incident and police response:

This kind of activity is illegal and will not be tolerated. Reckless Driving is considered a Class 1 Misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a fine up to $2,500. Our detectives will continue to investigate the incident.
