PORTSMOUTH POLICE CHARGE SUSPECT FOR MAKING CONCERNING THREATS ONLINE
PORTSMOUTH, VA — On Monday, December 12, 2022, the Portsmouth Police Department was made aware of several concerning threats that were posted online by 41-year-old Torrey L. Sutton. Investigators received numerous calls and tips in reference to the online threats, which included references to two mass shootings, and a photo of three firearms.
Investigators charged Sutton with Communicating a Threat in Writing, which is a Class 5 Felony. On Saturday, December 17, 2022, Sutton was apprehended. A Petition for Emergency Substantial Risk Order was filed, and his Concealed Carry Permit was seized per the order. Investigators recovered the three firearms depicted in his threats.
Sutton is currently being held without bond at the Portsmouth City Jail. We want to take this time to thank the public for their assistance and for bringing these threats to our attention.
