PORTSMOUTH POLICE INVESTIGATE HOMICIDE ON GEORGE WASHINGTON HIGHWAY

Investigators have arrested 20-year-old Djuan Rapheal Jones Jr. He is charged with First Degree Murder, Attempted Aggravated Malicious Wounding, two counts of Shooting in the Commission of a Felony, and two counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. He is currently being held at the Portsmouth City Jail.

Detectives have acquired more images of an unknown suspect vehicle. It appears to be a 2014–2018 Silver Jeep Cherokee. Those with information about this vehicle are urged to contact detectives at 757–393–8536 or the Crimeline at 1–888-LOCK-U-UP.

ORIGINAL RELEASE:

PORTSMOUTH, VA — On June 6, 2022, at approximately 5:06 p.m., officers responded to the 4500 block of George Washington Highway for a reported gunshot wound incident near the Green Clean Car Wash. Officers located 45-year-old Melvin Gregory Bynum with several gunshot wounds. His injuries proved fatal, next of kin has been notified. Detectives have acquired surveillance footage of a possible suspect vehicle. Witnesses described a silver SUV with two armed males inside.

(On the surveillance footage the vehicle is at the top right hand corner of the screen moving left, just beyond the parking lot.)
