PORTSMOUTH POLICE INVESTIGATE POP-UP MARIJUANA MARKET
PORTSMOUTH, VA — On March 8, 2023, at approximately 5:45 p.m., officers responded to a report of suspicious activity near the 600 block of High Street. Upon arrival, law enforcement located a possible Marijuana “pop-up” flea market operating out of a storefront. When law enforcement attempted to make contact with the occupants, officers were met by unlicensed armed security guards outside.
Additional units from the Special Investigations Unit, Community Enhancement Division, and the Uniform Patrol responded to assist and detained approximately 41 adults. Investigators acquired a search warrant and located 11 firearms that were abandoned. They seized two additional firearms, 100 pounds of Marijuana, and a variety of manufactured products containing THC, including THC-infused candy disguised as popular candy brands that pose a serious risk to children.
These individuals came from a variety of locations throughout Virginia to purchase marijuana. No one claimed ownership of any of the firearms or the large quantities of marijuana that were located. All individuals who were detained have been released pending the outcome of this investigation.
Under Virginia law (18.2–248.1), with limited exceptions through licensed dispensaries, it is unlawful to sell, distribute or possess with intent to sell or distribute marijuana. Possession with intent to distribute more than one ounce of marijuana is a Class-1 Misdemeanor, Possession of more than one ounce but not more than five pounds is a Class-5 Felony, and more than five pounds is a felony punishable by five to 30 years in prison.
