PORTSMOUTH POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING NEAR GREENELAND BLVD

PORTSMOUTH, VA — On June 28, 2023, at approximately 7:59 pm, officers responded to the 40 block of Greeneland Boulevard for a reported gunshot wound incident. Upon arrival, officers located a 51-year-old female with life-threatening injuries and encountered an armed 56-year-old male. Officers gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop his weapon. The male suspect did not comply and discharged his firearm at Portsmouth Police Officers. The officers returned fire and the suspect suffered a fatal injury consistent with a gunshot wound. The female was taken to a hospital for treatment and is currently in critical but stable condition. No officers were harmed during the incident.

At the request of the Portsmouth Police Department, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation will be investigating the officer-involved shooting. The Portsmouth Police Officers involved are on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. We will continue to investigate the gunshot wound incident that occurred prior to officer arrival that evening.
