USE OF FORCE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

PORTSMOUTH, VA- On October 13, 2022, around 1:30 a.m., the Portsmouth Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit was posted near George Washington Highway doing surveillance on a homicide suspect. Detectives were inside a city vehicle when an unknown number of suspects approached the vehicle and threatened detectives inside. Detectives inside the van alerted other PPD personnel in the area and they quickly responded to assist. Upon their arrival, detectives located an individual walking in the street and attempted to detain him. The individual did comply and sat on the ground. While the subject was on the ground, a third detective came up to the individual and assaulted him. That detective was restrained and immediately removed from the area. Upon further investigation, the detective was arrested and charged with simple assault. He is currently on leave without pay, pending the outcome of this investigation.
